Our friend and Client Dr. Jim posted a great tech article about the changes coming to our desktops. We thought we'd amplify it here, Jim writes... Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10, which means it may be time to start thinking about upgrading your system. But with so many options, how do you choose the right one? Let’s break it down.
Step 1: Identify Your Needs
Before purchasing a new computer, consider how it will be used:
Basic Use (Web browsing, emails, online banking, word processing)
Recommended specs: Intel i3 (10th Gen), 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD
If more storage is needed, opt for a larger SSD. If more processing power is required, consider an i5 or i7 processor.
Creative Work (Photo & Video Editing)
Recommended specs: Minimum Intel i5, 16GB RAM, and a dedicated video card with at least 2GB of memory (4GB is ideal).
Always check the software requirements before purchasing.
Gaming
System requirements depend on the games played. Always check the game's specs online and aim for more than the minimum to ensure smooth performance.
Mac vs. PC – Stick to What You Know
Mac users should generally stick with Macs, and Windows users should stick with PCs unless they want to switch.
Macs are typically more expensive but are the go-to choice for graphic designers and photographers.
Recycle Your Old Computer & Give Back
If you’re upgrading, don’t let your old computer gather dust! At Dr. Jim’s Computer Repair, we offer a recycling program—and for every computer brought in, we donate $25 in your name to the Fear Nothing Association of Ontario, supporting mental health awareness. Nobody should suffer alone in silence.
